L236 Super Yellow Pleco (Hypancistrus sp)

L236 Super Yellow Pleco (Hypancistrus sp)

L236 Super Yellow Pleco — Hypancistrus sp.
The collector’s zebra

The L236 Super Yellow Pleco is one of the most coveted Hypancistrus in the hobby — a fish prized not for size, but for precision. Jet black lines laid over a bright lemon-yellow base create a living contrast that looks almost artificial, like it was designed rather than evolved. Each individual carries a completely unique pattern, making every specimen a one-of-one showpiece.

Originating from the Xingu River system in Brazil, these plecos inhabit rocky crevices in highly oxygenated water. Instead of grazing algae like common plecos, L236 are micropredators, feeding on small invertebrates and protein-rich foods. In the aquarium they spend much of their time tucked into caves and structure, emerging at feeding time or low light to display their striking coloration against dark backgrounds.

Staying around 3.5–4.5 inches, they are perfect for high-end planted tanks, nano monster communities, and collector setups. They prefer warm, clean water, strong filtration, and plenty of caves — especially ceramic breeding caves where pairs may spawn and guard eggs deep inside the shelter.

The Super Yellow variant is especially sought after because the yellow base intensifies with age and proper diet, turning from pastel to neon as the fish matures. Under subdued lighting, the pattern pops dramatically, instantly drawing attention even in large displays.

This rare and expensive pleco is highly sought after by hobbyists and breeders.  It is originally found in Brazil, but it is unclear whether it is a pure species or a naturally occurring hybrid. Breeders are careful to  selectively breed this animal to preserve its unique markings.
