Rainbow Tetra (Hemigrammus skolioplatus)
Rainbow Tetra — Hemigrammus skolioplatus
Small fish, big light show
The Rainbow Tetra is proof that size has nothing to do with impact. Native to calm tributaries and flooded forest waters of the Amazon basin, this slender characin transforms under lighting — flashing iridescent blues, greens, and hints of gold as the school turns together. In motion they shimmer like moving reflections rather than individual fish.
Growing to around 1.5–2 inches, they are peaceful, constantly active schooling fish that bring life to every level of the aquarium. When kept in proper groups they stay tight and coordinated, reacting instantly to movement and creating the natural “river energy” many larger tanks lack. A big aquarium with predators can feel empty — a school of Rainbow Tetras fills the space with motion and realism.
Their coloration intensifies over dark substrate, wood, and tannin-stained water, where the metallic stripe becomes almost neon. They are ideal companions for peaceful cichlids, eartheaters, smaller catfish, and larger display fish that won’t view them as prey, making them perfect dithers in South American themed setups.
Hardy and adaptable once established, they accept most prepared foods and remain active throughout the day, constantly grazing midwater.
